Sausage Balls

I first sampled Sausage Balls made with a baking mix at a reception years ago. They were good, but I experimented in my kitchen until I came up with this easy recipe for what my family agrees are the "most delicious Sausage Balls ever"! So now the "Secret Family Recipe" is out! Enjoy!

Ingredients:

2 cups self-rising flour
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 lb. roll of hot breakfast sausage
8 oz. shredded cheddar cheese

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with aluminum foil; spray aluminum foil with Pam Baking Spray.

Pour vinegar into milk and let set about 3-5 minutes, until milk starts to thicken.

Measure the flour into a large mixing bowl.

Pour milk/vinegar mixture into the flour and mix until soft dough is formed.

Break up sausage and add to dough mixture; mix well.

Add shredded cheese and mix well.

Continue mixing until cheese and sausage are evenly distributed in the dough. Hands work well for this step!

Place balls of dough, about 1-l/4" in diameter, on the baking sheets about 1/2" to 1" apart.

Bake at 400 degrees approximately 20 minutes until browned and sausage is done.

Nancy's Notes:
  • You may substitute 1 cup buttermilk for the milk and vinegar.
  • Mild sausage may be used.
  • For an "extra kick", you may add 1 teaspoon Tabasco Sauce when you mix in the sausage.
  • Leftovers freeze well and may be reheated in the microwave for a quick breakfast or snack.
  • My son Joshua often makes "Sausage Balls" for parties and family/friend gatherings. Thanks to Joshua for letting us photograph him as he made this delicious recipe!
Mmmm!  Bet you can't eat just one!
