DIY Embellished Layered Hair Bow

Want a cute layered bow with a designer look for your little darling? Use my easy to follow directions, photos, and templates to create a one-of-a-kind hair bow! Directions for Layered Hair Bow without embellishment are included.

Materials for each bow:

1-1/2" wide grosgrain ribbon (25")
5/8" wide grosgrain ribbon (28")
3/8" grosgrain ribbon (8-1/4")
hair-clip
embellishment (I used flat wooden pumpkins shapes from Hobby Lobby)
Tacky Glue
glue gun and glue sticks
hand-quilting thread and needle
Fray Check

Directions

Get Ready!

  • First, set up a Hot Glue Station. I used a cardboard box with a piece of shiny cardboard on top...and...

  • Get the templates ready. You will need 2 - 3" x 5" index cards or lightweight cardboard. For the first template, simply use the 3" x 5" index card. For the second template, cut 1" off the end of the other index card, making it 3" x 4". Draw a line in the middle of each card for center reference...and...

  • ...thread a needle with a 24" length of quilting thread. Tie a knot in the end of the doubled thread.

Make those bows!

Bottom Layer: 5" Bow

  • Starting at one end, wrap the 1-1/2" ribbon lengthwise around the 3" x 5" card. You should end up with 2 loops on each end. Slide a long clip onto the ribbon and card to hold it securely.

  • Use the center line on the index card as a reference to mark the center of the ribbon with a pen or pencil.

  • Carefully slide the ribbon off the card and hand sew through the middle of all loops using long running stitches (about 1/2" long).

  • Pull the thread snugly, rearranging loops as needed. Wrap the thread around the center of the bow 4-5 times, and sew a few stitches on the center back to finish.

Top Layer: 4" Bow

  • Starting at one end, wrap the 5/8" ribbon lengthwise around the 3" x 4" card. You should end up with 3 loops on each end. Slide a long clip onto the ribbon and card to hold it securely. Use the center line on the index card as a reference to mark the center of the ribbon with a pen or pencil.

Don't come unraveled!

  • Fold the ends of the ribbons together and cut at an angle. To prevent fraying, apply Fray Check to ends and set aside to dry. Fray Check dries clear.

Note: Ends of ribbon may also be cut straight across or diagonally.

Cover the Clip!

  • Cut a 4-1/4" piece of 3/8" ribbon. With clip opened, apply a small amount of hot glue to the inside top of the clip. Carefully press the ribbon over the hot glue onto the clip.

  • Apply hot glue to the top side of the clip; fold the ribbon over the top, pressing ribbon to glue.

  • Apply hot glue to the bottom spring end of the clip, fold ribbon over, and glue.

  • Glue the 4" bow to the center of the 5" bow using Tacky Glue and hot glue. Press a few seconds until hot glue sets.

Get It Together!

  • Turn the bow upside down. Apply Tacky Glue and hot glue to the top side of the clip along the ribbon, and glue to the back side of the bow. Press a few seconds until hot glue sets.
  • Cut a 4" piece of 3/8" grosgrain ribbon. Apply a small amount of Tacky Glue and hot glue to one end of the ribbon. Open the clip and immediately press the end of the ribbon to the ribbon-covered clip (See photo below).

  • Tightly wrap the other end of the ribbon around the bow and use hot glue and Tacky Glue to secure around the bow. Trim the end of the bow and apply a small amount of Tacky Glue to the edge to secure, if needed.

You're almost there!

If you just want a layered bow, you could be finished at this point...

...but if you want some embellishments...

  • Use Tacky Glue and hot glue to adhere the ornament or button into place. Press a few seconds until the hot glue sets.

Some like polka dots...
...and some like it checkered!
